What Is the Average Vet Consultation Fee in the UK?

A vet consultation is the starting point for almost every visit - and yet most pet owners have no idea what a fair price looks like until they're already at the desk. Here's what you should expect to pay in 2026.

The Average UK Vet Consultation Fee

For a standard daytime appointment, most UK vets charge between £40 and £80. The national average sits around £55–£65, though this varies significantly by region and practice type.

RegionTypical consultation fee
London£65 – £95
South East£55 – £80
Midlands£45 – £65
North of England£40 – £60
Scotland / Wales£40 – £65

What Does a Consultation Fee Cover?

A standard consultation (usually 10–15 minutes) covers:

  • Clinical examination of your pet
  • Discussion of symptoms and history
  • Diagnosis or referral advice

It does not include treatments, prescriptions, blood tests, or any additional procedures. These are charged on top - which is where vet bills can escalate quickly.

Why Are Prices So Different Between Vets?

Corporate vs independent practices

Several large corporate groups (IVC Evidensia, CVS, Medivet) now own a significant share of UK vet practices. Studies have found these practices tend to charge more on average than independent vets. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched an investigation into this in 2024.

Overheads and location

A practice in a high-rent area needs to charge more to cover costs. A rural or suburban independent practice often has more flexibility on pricing.

Out-of-hours fees

Emergency or out-of-hours consultations are usually charged at a significant premium - often £100–£200+ just for the consultation, before any treatment. This is one of the strongest arguments for pet insurance.

Is the Cheapest Vet Always the Right Choice?

Not necessarily. A lower consultation fee doesn't mean lower quality - but it's worth checking reviews and making sure the practice is RCVS-accredited. What you want to avoid is a vet that charges a low consultation fee but upsells aggressively on treatments and products.

How to Know If You're Overpaying

The problem is that most pet owners only know what one or two local vets charge. Without a comparison, there's no way to know if £75 is reasonable or expensive for your area. That's exactly the gap WhatTheVet is built to fill.
